SLJ: Week 1 - Day 1: In the beginning

SUMMER LEARNING JOURNEY
- BY: Isla
TODAY'S TOPIC:
" A place to stand ".
This week I am going to be learning all about New Zealand land marks. Today my focus was to accomplish three activities about New Zealand. I hope you enjoy reading my work.

TASK ONE:
Our first task was to research three facts about Maori legends. I created a animation on google slides to try make my work more interesting.

TASK TWO:
My second task today was to describe what I love about my hometown.

I was born in Blenheim and grew up in Christchurch from a very young age. The most important thing to me about Christchurch(My home town.)is the landscapes and the amazing buildings. I love going for walks along the hills and viewing the city center below.

TASK THREE:
My final task for today was to copy an image from the summer learning journey site and copy it to this post and create a diagram of a smart footprint.

If you are questioning how to create a positive , digital , footprint I am here to answer that. First of all you have to be smart online.

  • STEP ONE: Do not share any personal or private inforation online. e.g ( passwords , phone numbers and your last name.
  • STEP TWO: Be aware of scammers and hackers.
  • STEP THREE: Do not share online where you live or where you meet up after school on chat rooms or any public chats.
Stay safe and happy holidays!

  1. Hi Isla! My name is Susie and I will be commenting on your blogs throughout our Summer Learning Journey this year. I would like to tell you a little bit more about myself before we kick-start this off! I am from Korea and I came to New Zealand when I turned 13. Prior to that, I was living in Canada for about a year when I was ten and I have to say, it was the most amazing experience I had in my life. I did not speak a word of English when I first arrived but my friends and teachers have helped me all the way through. That is why I decided that I want to become a teacher and spread the love which I once received. Other than teaching, I also LOVE painting, drawing, designing and taking photographs. What do you love to do during your free time? What is your favourite food? I would love to get to know about your passion and what you enjoy!

Great job on finishing your first set of activities to a high standard Isla, I am SUPER impressed. You are so talented and I can see that you have put in a lot of effort into making your animation fun and interesting- I was smiling the whole way through. Should I be thanking you for creating this animation or should I thank Kiwi for taking me on a trip? I want to share one of my favourite fun facts about New Zealand - Did you know that only 5% of NZ's population is human and the rest are animals? (Absolutely mind-blowing, right?) Speaking of animals, what is your favourite animal? Can I make a guess and say that it is dogs because your animation ended with a dog? You should let me know.

Which part about Christchurch do you love the most? I have only been there once but I would love to visit again, you should tell me three MUST-VISIT places if you have any in mind. The hometown I come from is a busy marine city named 'Busan' which is located at the bottom of Korea. I remember growing up next to a beach and there was also a small hill behind my apartment where I used to go for walks. If I had to choose one between a beach or a forest, mine would definitely have to be a beach!

Thank you Isla for sharing your digital footprint. You have provided important points that everyone should remember when communicating with other online users. I am super excited to see more of your amazing blog posts Isla. Let's have some fun during summer together and I wish you happy holidays as well! Ka Kite :)

  2. Hi Susie ,
Thank you Susie for your comment. My favourite food would have to be pizza. I enjoy drawing , painting , reading , taking photos and writing stories. I guess we have a lot in common. Its hard to choose a favourite animal because dogs and cats are both so cute and I can't decide between them. Your facts that you shared were really interesting and to hear that 5 percent of the human population is human and the rest are animals thats crazy. If I chose between a forest or a beach I think I would choose the beach as well. I think that three places I would want to go to would be Japan , Korea , china and all of ASIA! with my best friend Maggie. I have always grown up in Christchurch and I think that if you love art , drawing , designing and that kind of thing then you should visit the central library in Christchurch. I have only ever been there once and I think that if I had to rate it , it would be five out of five. That's how great it is. In my free time I also really enjoy making you tube videos. I will make sure to upload a few more if you want to check it out. My channel is Mittenz XD if you were wondering. I'm thinking of posting some videos about drawing but I can't think of anything to draw. Do you have any ideas?

    1. Hi Isla,
Thank you so much for taking your time to reply to all of the questions. It is lovely getting to know you a bit more and I am thrilled to find out that we have so much in common!
It is exciting to know that you have so many hobbies and interests that could keep you busy during summer. I will definitely have to visit the central library in Christchurch one day - it sounds pretty amazing! Have you ever been to the art gallery in Auckland? Places like these are great to get some inspiration and ideas from.

Being able to create videos is such an awesome skill to have. You should definitely share some of the videos you make in the future because I would love to see them! Below is a link to my blog that showcases some of the artwork I have been creating. You should make a visit to get some ideas if you wish :)

  3. Malo E Lelei Isla,

Sorry for the late comment, but I am surprised by how well you have been doing this summer holidays. I am really enjoying each and everyone of your posts that you have decided to create, incredible work. My reason why I am commenting on your blog is because I really love the work you are presenting to us. Another reason is because I really like activity 3 about you telling us ways to be cybersmart online. I really love your opinions/suggestions you have given us. Step 1 is very easy to do, I will definitely start telling people not to do this. Your suggestions are really clear simple to understand and you’ve added in so much details to the rest of your activities. Awesome blog post Isla, Keep up the great work. Do people ever do this at your school?

    Bye,
    Hinerangi
