SLJ - Week 1 - Day 2: Giants Among Us

SUMMER LEARNING JOURNEY
- BY: Isla

TOPIC:
" Giants among us ".

Today I had another three tasks that I had to complete. My learning goal for today is to try make my work more interesting so that my viewers can enjoy reading it.

TASK ONE:
QUESTION: Would you like to visit Tane Mahuta?
Today I was asked if I would like to visit Tane Mahuta. I had to have a little think about this for a moment and then decided that actually visiting Tane Mahuta in real life would be really interesting. Tane Mahuta lives in the Waipoua forest in North land. Tane Mahuta is an endemic tree to New Zealand and is also referred to sometimes as " the Lord of the forest ". Did you know that Tane Mahuta is actually the largest Kauri tree in the Waipoua forest.

TASK TWO:
My second task for today was to research about three famous sporting teams that have the word fern in their name and say what uniform of theirs that I liked best.

TASK THREE:
My final task for today was to solve a math problem. The math problem was that if I had a cactus plant and it needed 3 milliliters of water per day that over a full year how much water would I have given it. First there are 365 days in a year that means that 365 times 3 would make the answer 1095 milliliters. But how I solved it was that 300 x 3 is 900 but if I times 65 by 3 it would make that answer 195 add that onto 900 and it would make it 1095.

  1. I ABSOLUTELY love how you have a learning goal/focus for each day Isla, it is always a good habit to have so keep it up!

I am delighted to hear that you are willing to go and see Tane Mahuta located in in the Waipoua Forest. Why do you think they have named the tree "Lord of the Forest"? What does this name remind you of? If I was to visit this tree myself, the first thing I'd do is to take a picture with it so I can see how tiny I look standing next to the tree. What would you like to do when you get a chance to visit?

Great job on creating a separate page to summarise the information about NZ Sports Teams. As a reader, it was very easy to follow and also pretty exciting to read. I love how you have created a system to give each team points for their uniform design. If you get a chance to design Silver Fern's uniform, what would it look like? Would you make any changes? Surprise me with your creativity!

Last but not least, well done on solving this maths problem Isla, you are a super star! I have to mention that explaining the steps you have taken to get to the answer is extremely important when you solve questions like this. This way, you will always be able to go back to your explanation to check whether if you made any mistakes or not. Well done Isla ⭐⭐

  2. Hi Susie,
The reason why they named the tree "Tane Mahuta" was because the Maori god of earth is Tane Mahuta. If I had a chance to visit there I think I would probably take photos two. I think that if I could create a uniform for the silver ferns it would be silver with Maori designs on it and would have the Maori name for fern on it. That would be cool. The Maori designs on it would be black. Mine would probably have to be red and black because they go really well together and make a great color combination. I would really like to hear what your favorite two colors might be?

    1. Hi Isla! It would be such a challenge for me to choose my favourite two colours because I love playing with mixing colours on my palette. Have you heard about tints and tones? You create tints when you add white to a colour and tones are created when you add black.

Depending on how much white or black you add to a colour, we can create so many different shades!

To go back to your question... I will have to go for green and purple if I had to choose two. What are your favourites? :)

  3. I wonder what sort of stuff you like doing when you have the chance to explore places. Do you think you would be more of a Tomboy or a girly girl. I think I would make more of a Tomboy but I do have a slightly girly side to me as well so I think I'm kind of in the middle.

    1. We indeed have so much in common Isla because I would give you the exact same answer! I have those days when I want to feel girly and sometimes I just go with whatever my mood tells me to go for.

I think as individual people, we have different shades inside us as well. We are never the same person and we are constantly changing and evolving!

One of the things I love to do is to go on hikes and walk on different surfaces of our earth (bare feet). Sometimes I think our shoes stop us from feeling the surface beneath us so I love to take my shoes off when I know I'm safe to do so in the area. :)
